A colourful commission for Cillian Johnston…

Last year I was approached by an Irish furniture and design company called Cillian Johnston who were looking for someone to help them design and create a unique print for fabric, that they could then make into cushions and lampshades. The brief was to come up with a graphic representation, but not a directly literal representation, of a lamp that was awarded best new product in the category “Table Top and Interiors” at Ireland’s premier design and craft expo, Showcase Ireland, 2012, The Aran Beag rectangle lamp. It has two Aran knitted panels with a distinct cable pattern on the front and back of the base, as you can see below, and that was going to be the inspiration behind my design.

They wanted me to try and use the aran knit style and the purply colours like the first lamp above, but weren’t neccessarily tied to it. And so I did some research on different aran knit styles and the one that grabbed me the most was the honeycomb style, featured in the centre of the jersey below.

I took 2 different ideas, one of making the basic repeat pattern very graphic and bold following the honeycomb aran knit style (kind of), and the other of highlighting the smaller finer detail of the actual knitting stitches themselves. I wanted to try and show the changing colours and textures of different angles of the stitches graphically, and did so using lots and lots of different purply and bluey photographic textures…

Below is a closeup of the pattern…the difference in scales of the pattern, up close and at a distance, allows the pattern to be used to create two completely different styles that can work together as a team or completely on their own.

Here are some of the pictures they took to show me their finished products. Note the beautiful hexagonal shaped wooden buttons which highlight and work so well with the honeycomb pattern. We decided to use use the bigger scale on the front of the cushion, and the smaller on the back so you could switch them around or feature them side by side.

Look who made into the Home Weekly supplement of the Sunday Times this last Sunday! None other than my space rocket solar system cushion cover! Seems quite appropriate given the week we’ve had, with Felix Baumgartner managing to successfully complete his Red Bull Stratos jump. And they called it a space invader…LOVE that! Flamin’ Flamingos!

For those of you who aren’t friends of handmade by me’s facebook page you might not know the exciting news yet! I am also delighted that this is my first and very happy post from sunny Cape Town. I received an email a few days ago to let me know that my Pink Flamingo! Cushion Cover has made it to the shortlist of 250 products from OVER 2 MILLION to be presented in the DaWanda Lovebook for Winter 2012-2013!!!

This is such exciting news for handmade by me as “the Lovebook is sent to journalists from across Europe, the US and Australasia, who may then select products for publication and publish them in magazines and newspapers. Products from previous Lovebooks were later published in Time magazine, Vogue, Gala, Brigitte and many other publications.”

Take a look at the Lovebook Summer 2012 here:

And for those of you who haven’t seen my Pink Flamingo! design here is the cushion cover and matching tea towel, and the design is also available in napkins…

Now lets hope this is the beginning of great things to come! I am working on some very exciting projects so as always…watch this space!

Time for tea…and finally the move!

So next week is the big move! And as much as I am absolutely excited to get my little business going in sunny South Africa, there are lots of mixed emotions with leaving Ireland, my home for the last 6 years. Anyways with that in mind, I won’t be posting much over the next 2 weeks while we enjoy our last few days in Dublin, and start getting settled into life in Cape Town. I can’t wait to begin posting again because that means I will have started to get cracking on my next set of ideas and projects, and I won’t be able to wait to show you all. So while we get on and move, I’ll leave you with some pics of my new tea towel range, all ready and waiting to find themselves a new home : )

And don’t forget if you want to keep up to date with any news in the meantime you can go to http://www.facebook.com/handmadebymeblog and “like” handmade by me’s facebook page.

Oxfam upcycle project…read all about it!

Remember my lovely origami birds chair I upcycled as a part of the Make Space for Oxfam Campaign, well here is the article from Stellar Magazine that featured the different designers and what they did for the project. As much as I hate that there is a full body picture of me in here, the chair looks great and I am happy I could help be a part of such a great campaign!

Here’s the article below, and if you would like any more information on the campaign itself click here. Here’s hoping my lovely chair generates some good money for them!

My original before and after pic…

Plum Crazy!

My friend Claire asked me if I would design her a wallpaper pattern for her new foodie blog called “The Plum Farmer’s daughter“. I thought I’d keep the pattern fun and modern because there are so many “same old” fruit prints out there. The beauty of digital printing is that it allows me to play around a lot more with photographs and textures and I wanted to combine the two with my very distinctive digital style. I also wanted to develop the pattern into napkins, tea towels and eventually aprons so the pattern had to be bright and colourful. I only found out AFTER I had created this design that Claire isn’t really into purple!!!! (ha ha I know!!!) So I created a slightly more blueish version for her to use.

Here they are below…soon to be available in napkins and tea towels for all people plum crazy : )

Its time to help SAVE OUR RHINOS again…

This is such an important and worthy cause I decided to post this again! Especially now Handmade by me has so many more followers than when I last posted this last time. So many of you helped before by signing the petition, thank you! Lets see if we can spread the word even further, its certainly a cause worth pushing!

There’s been quite alot of hype lately about the increasing severity of Rhino poaching, particularly in South Africa. According to acclaimed rhino scientists, if poaching continues at its current rate South Africa’s rhino herd will go into population decline by mid-2012. That is very tragic and it is getting progressively worse very fast.

For every item bought in this design below I will donate 10% to www.stoprhinopoaching.com. The design features both the black and white Rhinos and if you look a little closer you’ll see that the little flower/fireworks are made out of rhino spoor (footprints). Do something small for them (and for yourself) and order your Save Our Rhinos tea towel from my etsy store today!

You can also help make a difference too by signing this petition and by passing it on to help spread the word around the world and put an end to this savage and severe problem. Please click on the various links above to find out more about rhino poaching and see what other ways you can help.

Here is a photo I took last year of these beautiful animals. This is definitely a cause worth supporting!
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD. THANK YOU.
