NEWs…

Its been a very busy week (or rather couple of months) so far here at Handmade By Me HQ. Our new range has gone to print eeeeeeeeekkkkk and not only are we coming up with new designs, but new products as well. We are just so excited to show you all what we are working on….but I am afraid you will have to wait just a little bit longer…

However, I can show you a sneak peek of one of our new products….the decorative scarf! These are super soft and big and beautiful, and would work really well as a scarf in winter and/or even a sarong in summer : ) Our trial design was the pink flamingo and we have already had such great feedback on facebook and twitter. We can’t wait to start making and selling these with some of our new range prints. Let us know what you think…

And then how lucky are we to have our decorative placemats featured in the latest issue of SA Garden & Home. Home Front features their highlights from this month, from things to do and seasonal shopping to decor news and the best places to visit.

Some of you may have seen these already but here are a few (slighty blurry) sneak peeks of our products at work. (I only wish I had taken more!)

South African inspirations available in store…

I would like to start off by thanking everyone who came and supported Handmade By Me at the Constantia Gift Fair this last week. We had a disastrously rainy and windy start on Wednesday morning, but by Friday everything was well under way, and it turned out to be a very enjoyable and successful week.

Now I know I have introduced my new South African inspired range to you before (for those of you missed the previous post click here), but I wanted to share the photos from the product shoot that I did. They all sold so well at the Constantia Gift Fair, and make really great gifts for friends and family overseas as they are super easy to post. The cushion covers are available filled or on their own. Chat to me about sending gifts overseas for you, I have designed some beautiful Christmas gift wrap and will be offering a gift wrap and post service from now until Christmas.

Available now from The Shoestring Collective Pop-Up Shop and The Handmade By Me Online Shop, and various other stockists : )

Introducing my new Wedding Napkins…

For all you people out there, who like me, have lots of friends tying the knot at the moment, I have have a new genius gift idea which you can pretty much give to everyone! Introducing…. my new Wedding Napkins. Custom printed and handmade napkins made using beautiful photographs taken on that special day.

HMBM_WeddingNapkins

HMBM_WeddingNapkins2

HMBM_WeddingNapkins3

I recently came up with this idea when I was trying to think of something completely unique and different to give to my friends for their wedding gift. I am always that person who thinks that I would rather give something a little more special than just choosing off their registry…specially when you’ve missed all the good things, and all that is left is a paper shredder (go figure??), and/or a cook book of some kind.

Anyways there we were in this beautiful beautiful location on a farm in the middle of nowhere in the Karoo. I think I must have instagrammed alot of pics to try and show everyone just how beautiful this part of our country is, and THAT is when I had the idea to use this beautiful setting to help create a wedding gift that will not only be unique, but unforgettable too.

Instead of using my not so amazing nor good quality instagram pics as I had planned, I got in touch with Shannon Bradfield, official (and brilliant) photographer and groom’s sister, to see if she might be able to let me use some of her beautiful shots. She was totally on board and sent me all high res shots I needed….and voila! A set of 6 beautiful photographs turned into a set of 12 beautiful napkins.

HMBM_WeddingNapkins4

Available in sets of 6 big napkins or 8 smaller napkins. You can pre-purchase a set of Wedding Napkins at my online shop. I will email you an image to print out and give to the lucky couple to let them know about your super awesome and very special gift on the day. They can then put me in touch with their photographer and help choose which images they would like to use, or I can choose for them. I’ll get them printed and made up and will post/courier them straight to the lucky couple’s door!

If you would like any more information please check out my online shop or email me directly. I am happy to help : )

South African Inspired : )

Yay so the good news is that my Thundafund campaign to move my printing to South Africa was a success : ) I managed to raise over R14 000 and I could not have done it without you my fellow supporters!!! THANK YOU!

For those of you who ordered products through the campaign, I will be in touch shortly to discuss which designs you would like to order for your 100% locally produced Handmade By Me products!

I am also delighted to finally be able to release my new South African inspired top secret design which is exclusive to my Thundafund campaign. I also have another two designs in the same style which you will be able to order going forward. They are all old illustrations of South Africa in the 1800’s printed onto a cotton twill, and I just love the black and white contrast. Available as tea towels, cushion covers and as a set of 8 Napkins.

…only 25 days to go: my Thundafund campaign update

I only have 25 days left to go to find out if my Thundafund campaign was a success and whether I will be able to move all my printing to South Africa. So far I have been overwhelmed by the amount of supporters and support specially from all my friends and family. I would like to take this opportunity to really thank everyone who has supported my campaign so far! You guys are the BEST!!!

At the moment I have almost reached my first target of R13 000 which means my campaign is almost a success, and my top secret design is just a few rands away from being released! Don’t you just want to know what it is already!! ; ) With that in mind, if any of you have been considering purchasing any of my rewards, now is the time to take advantage and help push me over the finish line. Don’t forget you will be able to choose products in any of my existing designs, or from my new unreleased winter range (below), or the exclusive top secret design which will only be revealed when I reach my target. For more details on me, and my campaign in particular, please watch (and feel free to share) the video below which I made to help explain my story behind the campaign…

And for even more details check out the campaign itself or the post I did right at the beginning… How you can help Handmade by Me become 100% locally produced…

Thank you!!

How you can help Handmade by Me become 100% locally produced…

I have just launched a campaign to help bring Handmade by Me home and now I need your help to please help me make this happen! I made this little video to help explain my story…

Because there are tremendous upfront costs in getting my printing done locally I am asking you to help support my campaign by essentially pre-buying Handmade by Me products (which means you get something) and I get the capital I need to start printing locally. By pledging Handmade By Me’s fantastic rewards listed on on my campaign page – you will effectively be pre-buying my 1st batch of 100% local, handmade accessories and interior products from a choice of either: my current range, my new unreleased winter collection, OR a brand new, once-off custom design that can only be purchased through this project when I reach my first target.

I am using a new South African crowdfunding platform called Thundafund which essentially works like the more popular US version, Kickstarter, where I, the project creator, can set up a project, whereby if people like it, they can pledge money (buy rewards) to make it happen. The project creator sets up a funding goal and deadline and projects must reach their funding goals to receive any money.

There are free rewards, rewards to suit any budget, and I would absolutely love it if you could please share my video, share my campaign, share this post, and anything that will help spread the word will be greatly appreciated!!!

Please support my campaign and help bring Handmade by Me home!

A colourful commission for Cillian Johnston…

Last year I was approached by an Irish furniture and design company called Cillian Johnston who were looking for someone to help them design and create a unique print for fabric, that they could then make into cushions and lampshades. The brief was to come up with a graphic representation, but not a directly literal representation, of a lamp that was awarded best new product in the category “Table Top and Interiors” at Ireland’s premier design and craft expo, Showcase Ireland, 2012, The Aran Beag rectangle lamp. It has two Aran knitted panels with a distinct cable pattern on the front and back of the base, as you can see below, and that was going to be the inspiration behind my design.

aran_beag_pink_rectangle_needlesaran_beag_grey_rectangle_black_shade

They wanted me to try and use the aran knit style and the purply colours like the first lamp above, but weren’t neccessarily tied to it. And so I did some research on different aran knit styles and the one that grabbed me the most was the honeycomb style, featured in the centre of the jersey below.

027-Arans-Aran-Knitting-Pattern-500px

I took 2 different ideas, one of making the basic repeat pattern very graphic and bold following the honeycomb aran knit style (kind of), and the other of highlighting the smaller finer detail of the actual knitting stitches themselves. I wanted to try and show the changing colours and textures of different angles of the stitches graphically, and did so using lots and lots of different purply and bluey photographic textures…

CJ2

Below is a closeup of the pattern…the difference in scales of the pattern, up close and at a distance, allows the pattern to be used to create two completely different styles that can work together as a team or completely on their own.

CJ1

Here are some of the pictures they took to show me their finished products. Note the beautiful hexagonal shaped wooden buttons which highlight and work so well with the honeycomb pattern. We decided to use use the bigger scale on the front of the cushion, and the smaller on the back so you could switch them around or feature them side by side.
