Thank you

Today’s blog post is a little unusual as we have some sad news to share with you all. After 6 wonderful, crazy, exciting, emotional, everything-you-can-imagine years, we have finally made the decision to slowly wind down our product offering and close the doors to Handmade By Me.

I should probably start by saying 2017 was definitely one of the most interesting years for HMBM, filled with an incredible amount of highs (the launch and success of our new Biotica range, we added lots of new products to our offering, and we took on lots of new stockists, both local and overseas) but we also had some lows, some of which have made us take a step back and look at the bigger picture, to decide if we want to grow our business into something bigger, or if we want to focus our energy elsewhere.

After a hell of a lot of debating, changing my mind every 5 minutes, serious brainstorming and much philosophical thought about work life balance, and about what it is that I actually want to spend my time doing, I have made the really tough decision that I am going to slowly close the HMBM doors and give myself the opportunity to invest more time and energy on the part that I love most – design!

And so while I slowly wrap things up with HMBM, I am planning to spend my time taking on as many exciting design jobs as possible, hopefully working on some collaborative product design projects with other like-minded individuals, and finally, working on another business idea which I really am excited about developing. Please do keep my design (product & graphic) services in mind should anyone you know be interested.

I will still be assisting clients with custom product design and development, and our wallpaper and fabrics will still be available to purchase for the foreseeable future.

As much as this is possibly the hardest decision I have ever had to make (I can’t tell you how long it took me to write this post), I think that in my heart of hearts it is the right decision to make, and as hard as this closing down part is (its the worst), I am really excited about taking what I have learnt over the past 6 years and turning it into something more fulfilling, something more considered, and hopefully something more joyful and rewarding.

Our little retail store’s lease is up at the end of February and so no better time to start the winding down process than after that.

Our last day of trade in our little retail store will be Saturday 24th February, 9:30 – 2pm, when we will also be offering you an additional 25% off all purchases in store. This will be on top of the sale which is on at the moment with 40% off selected products, both in-store and online, while stocks last. I really hope you will be able to join us.

We will keep our online shop and any wholesale orders open as usual until the end of March, with any last fulfillments in April.

The online shop will continue on until all our stock is sold, and from there you will only be able to purchase our products from selected stockists.

For now, I would like to personally thank you all so much for all the support over the past few years. HMBM just wouldn’t be anywhere without the wonderful people who have embraced our brand and our products and loved them like their own : ) You are the core of our business and we can only hope that we have managed to contribute toward your lives, in the way that you have our business.

And because our doors aren’t closed just yet, we look forward to a fantastic last couple of months with you. We’ll be sharing any updates over the next few months here and on our social media pages. Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!

Happy happy…

Just a quick little first blog post of the year to wish you all a happy and healthy 2018! We hope you’ve all had a nice break, and that you feel as refreshed as we do for the new year ahead.

As the year has barely just begun, we don’t have too much news to share with you just yet, but we would like to share with you a lovely little project we were working on toward the end of last year.

I’m not sure if you know, but Klein Constantia, home of the infamous Vin de Constance, has just had a little make-over with a new gift shop, as well as a new restaurant which should have opened up to the public last week. Handmade By Me was brought on board to help develop some exclusive new products for the gift shop which is really something we LOVE to do. It was also really great that Klein Constantia had some lovely imagery on hand that we were able to use on a whole range of different products including cushions, tea towels, pot stand/trivets and trays. We’re hoping to expand on the range throughout the year, but we’re so happy with the responses we’ve had so far.

If custom design or product development interests you, have a look some other similar product development we did for The Trading Company at the Spice Route.

Then in other news, here is our #bestnine2017 from Instagram. We didn’t get to share this with you before the year was out, so here you go. Sometimes you really need to look back to see how far you’ve come. The fact that my book managed to grab one of the places makes me lol, but also happy to see our Foliage prints and media love up there!

Thank you to our friend Kerry for sharing these photos of the sweetest baby Max showing off his unique crawling style and interesting model poses in his African Aloes nappy cover.

And below are some other recent scenes from the Handmade By Me instagram world.

We’re having a pre-Christmas SALE!

This November, Handmade By Me is having our biggest SALE yet! With 40% off selected products, you have no more excuses not to give everyone you know HMBM for Christmas. Whether you’re after a pair of our hotel slippers, or some cushions to brighten up your home before the visitors arrive, or even some tea towels or napkins for that Secret Santa. Whatever you decide, you better be fast, as the sale is only available while stocks last. Please note that the sale is available online and in-store.

Handmade By Me has been lucky enough to receive some serious media love over the past month which we would love to share with you.

Here is a Q&A with myself in the latest Garden & Home magazine where I reveal my favourite millenial pink finds. If you didn’t know already, I am quite clearly obsessed!

G&H Nov17

We have also been lucky enough to have been featured in Elle Decoration‘s floral inspirations as well as their favourites inspired by the East. See if you can spot our Imari placemats as well as our Foliage cushion covers.

Home magazine gave our Foliage on Pink cushion cover the green light.

And Fair Lady magazine picked our Prickly Pears hotel slippers as one of their Fauna & Flora favourites.

And in case you missed our recent social media posts, we shared some of our latest customer pics. Here is a sneak peek of our Foliage on Pink wallpaper recently installed in this beautiful bathroom.IMG_4526

And one of our regular customer’s, Janet, sent us this pic of her Pretty Proteas blind she had made to match the lampshades in her Airbnb apartment in Gardens.

And lastly here are some of the latest images from our Instagram feed. We have been obsessing over our new Foliage hotel slippers which are now available to order online and/or in-store. We also have Foliage lampshades coming soon, as well as a special  limited edition of our Lux Panama 60x60cm double-sided cushion covers.

Don’t forget we have you covered this Christmas with our range of Christmas stockings, greeting cards and gift tags. And remember we’re always happy to gift wrap too, you just have to ask : )

Spring is in the air…

Spring has sprung and the August sale (and hopefully winter) has blown away, and we’re already getting excited for summer! Not as much as little Grace here showing off her cute little face and her Pretty Proteas nappy cover.

Thanks so everyone who supported us, and took advantage of our August Blows sale, it has been a (whirl)wind of a month for us. We are now off on a 2 week break so we have decided to extend the sale in-store for the next two weeks, so you can still take advantage just in case you missed it!

But before we head off, we would like to share some of the wonderful media love we have received over the past month.

Visi magazine celebrated the Brazilian Olympics with a Carnival of Colour including our Pink Flamingo Cushion Cover.

Your Family magazine shared our Delft placemats as part of their 5 Best Delft Blue Buys.

And in shop news this month, we had a very exciting feature recently in the Sunday Times Property News.

In the shop, not only have we introduced lots of new Handmade By Me products lately, but we have also introduced our latest collaborative product with Windowsill, pressed plants. Even though we only have a few in stock at the moment we are very excited about all the different green and leafy possibilities that can be placed between 2 pieces of soldered glass.

And do come and see our brand new Alex Snell prints which were created specially for our little shop – titled Gothic Africa, and inspired by our little part of the world. These prints are part of a signed limited edition and are available exclusively from us either framed in soldered glass or unframed.

And last but not least, watch out Joburg, we are coming for you! We are VERY excited to be exhibiting at the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair at Hyde Park shopping centre in October. Watch this space for more details or take a look at their website.

all shiny and new…

I must say it feels a lot like Christmas at Handmade By me at the moment with all the new exciting products and samples that we have been trialling and testing of late. Now that we have our own retail space, we get to explore all sorts of different products which we can stock and display at the same time. We also love to make sure that we have lots of lovely new things in our shop to keep our loyal customers coming back for more.

One of the most exciting things we have started making (maybe it’s just the cute baby photos) are our muslin baby blankets. Made with a beautiful soft 100% cotton muslin, these blankets are 1m x 1m in size, and are available in 3 designs – Prickly Pears, Pretty Proteas and Pink Flamingo. Whether you use it as a swaddle, sunshade, nursing cover, play mat, or burp cloth, these blankets, quite literally, have you covered. You can order directly from the Handmade By Me online shop or pop into our store on De Lorentz St in Tamboerskloof.

We are also busy making some small muslin bags and squares that can be used for cooking. Muslin is a handy piece of material to have in the kitchen, especially as it can be washed, dried and continually reused. The cook’s muslin is a natural, finely-woven fabric often used when filtering or straining.

Thanks to The Essential Ingredient, here are some of the many ways muslin can be used in the kitchen:

  • Straining liquids to filter out any impurities (such as stocks or consommé)
  • Hanging cooked fruit to separate out liquid, essential for creating quince or apple jellies or marmalades
  • Making cheese; squeezing liquid whey from the cheese curd
  • Filtering aged wines or port for decanting, removing any sediment
  • Soak muslin in butter and cover turkey or chicken breasts while roasting to keep them moist
  • Strain yoghurt for a few hours to thicken it into labna (eaten in Lebanese homes for every breakfast)
  • Wrap grated zucchini, potato, beetroot or carrot in muslin to easily squeeze out all excess moisture
  • Straining peppercorns, herbs and shallots from vinegar in a classic béarnaise sauce
  • Muslin cloth is essential when creating your own tofu from soy beans
  • Combine cream cheese and ricotta and strain into a classic Coeur à la crème
  • Wrap lemon or lime halves in muslin and place in the centre of the table for easy squeezing without pips or pulp
  • Make your own tea bags for an interesting morning tea spread
  • Line your bowl with muslin when proving bread dough to eliminate the need for excess flour or oil
  • Create a muslin bag filled with herbs and aromatics, for easy retrieval after making stock, soup or a classic sauce

We have also introduced a new product to our range – greeting cards. We chose 10 of our favourite designs, printed them onto A6 card, and then packaged them into individual sets together with a plain white envelope. Have a look at the full range here.

We also found out recently that our phone covers are now available in a clear plastic option which takes any white or light colour used in the design and prints it clear. Here, you can see below, we tested out our Geometric Monochrome design for the iPhone 6. What do you think?

This week we tested our first samples of melamine trays and pot stands in our designs, and we are SO impressed with how well they turned out! Not only are they so pretty and useful, they are also practical, and can handle up to 120C (248 F), are dishwasher-safe and scratch and stain resistant! These will be available to order very soon.

We finally managed to shoot our Prickly Pears and African Aloes tote bags and purses and upload them to our online shop.

And while we are talking about all things new, our first Handmade By Me + Windowsill collaboration products, in conjunction with the talented Alexis Snell, are ready and available to buy exclusively from our shop in Cape Town. These beautiful limited edition linocut prints come all the way from the UK and we are selling them framed (in soldered glass) or unframed. We just LOVE them.

And speaking of our shop, for this week only we have a new special on offer:  the perfect gift – an aloe potted in to graphite glazed terracotta and an orange squares tea towel for only R350. Only while stocks last! For more special offers, sales and events, follow us on facebook.

It’s a new month and we have some new stockists, new products, and new projects going down…spring has sprung which means new beginnings, and so it’s out with the old and in with the new…or nearly anyways.

First off, we’re so excited to let you know about our latest stockist specially because the owner is one of my nearest and dearest and I couldn’t be prouder! Everyone in Cape Town you HAVE to visit THE GENERAL STORE on cnr Bree St and Riebeek St. The food is sensational while still healthy with lots of choice, and the coffee is one of the best in town! Don’t even get me started on the brownies. This gorgeous feature by VISI magazine says it all. Pics below also by Visi magazine.

Some of you might not know that we supply our fabrics to Saks Corner, one of our favourite local furniture shops in town. Here’s a snap they sent us last week to show us just how fantastic their chair covered in our Geometric Orange panama fabric turned out. Swoon.

And like we said, it’s out with the old and in with the new, so Handmade By Me is having the BIGGEST sale we have ever had with selected products marked down to HALF PRICE. We are sad to say good bye to some of our older designs but we need to make space for new ones, so we have added lots of cushion covers, aprons, lampshades, tea towels and a few other bits and pieces.
