Summer update…‚ėÄūüź†ūüć¶ūüĆĽ‚ö°ūüĒ•

Hooray, summer is finally on its way, and so I thought it might be time for a little Handmade By Me update.

I can’t¬†believe it has been so long since our last post, but while it may look like things¬†have been very quiet on¬†the outside, there has actually been a whole lot going on on¬†the inside.¬†But with that being said, there is one small issue and that is that the only¬†problem with creating products for others and not for yourself, is that you¬†don’t get to choose when the projects get launched, or even if they get launched, or when you can show some¬†sneak peeks of what you are working on. So while we have been working on some seriously exciting projects behind the scenes, we have absolutely nothing that we can show you just yet!

What I can tell you, is that I have been working on some some exciting fashion brands creating and developing new designs for fabric, and then also helping others with developing existing designs into patterns and getting them ready to print. And we are also working on a few more custom designs and products for some lovely local restaurants, retailers and interior designers.

On a completely different note, I have also been really busy frantically working on a little collaboration I am doing with Anthony Shapiro, master of clay and wheel thrower extraordinaire : ) for Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair, an amazing design show which is on in Joburg this weekend. I am not sure if you are familiar with my pottery work, you may have seen some pics on my instagram feed, but Anthony has given me some of his bowls and vases that I have decorated using my favourite technique called Sgraffito, a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting colour. Those who know me well will know to expect to see lots of foliage and lots of florals.

If you live in Joburg and have not been to this show do yourself a favour and go check it out, it is really one of my favourite shows with all the best of the best of South African and African design! We were lucky enough to be a part of it a couple of years ago and we loved every minute.

The show is on from 12-14 October on the rooftop of Hyde Park Shopping Centre. Look out out for COLLECT by Anthony Shapiro in the Homeware Pavilion, and click here for more info about the show.

Then just a little side note that our online shop is still open for any fabric and wallpaper orders. I am so happy to see this part of our business is still doing so well.

And for any of our lovely stockists out there, just a small reminder that Christmas is around the corner (like I really need to remind you; )) so you might want to get those wholesale orders in as soon as possible.

I am happy to say that we still have a lovely bunch of retailers still carrying our products so if you are after some of our goodies please check out our list of stockists.

Hope to see you back here with some pics of what’s been going on, but until then, wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.

Sera

10406938_781720745180478_6018018976556261912_n

For those of you who don’t already know, Kamers is a design, food, wine and live music pop-up retail event, essentially a big fancy¬†market, which¬†is usually hosted once a year in different parts of the country. But this year in conjunction with the CCDI and World Design Capital Cape Town 2014, they will be hosting their first pop-up at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town.¬†What a sensational and seemingly appropriate venue!!! I can’t wait to see whats going on down there this weekend. You can find us and all sorts of¬†Handmade By me products at the Chandler House space, which I am sure will be¬†pretty spectacular! Pop in and say¬†hi when¬†are there!

Chandler House will not only be stocking Handmade By Me at Kamers, but you will also find some of our lovely things available to buy from their¬†design studio and shop on 53 Church Street, Cape Town. Now¬†seriously, if you haven’t had a chance to pop in and see Michael Chandler’s treasure trove of a space, Chandler House, already, you are indeed missing out! Amongst his own seriously beautiful works of art, my favourites being the Phrenology vases and VOC plates, which we also bought and used¬†for our wedding (and now home), there are all kinds of other very talented designers and artists (mostly ceramicists) who’s beautiful works of art can¬†be found displayed¬†together¬†alongside all kinds of bits and bobs that Michael has collected over the years including old paintings, furniture and antiques. The shop is filled with all kinds of nods towards Cape Heritage, and you will find it VERY hard to pop in, look around and leave empty handed!

Now just before you race down to Church street to take in this awesome hidden gem of a sight, Chandler House¬†will be closed from the 3rd to the 10th of June as they¬†move a few rooms around and give the shop a little bit of¬†a revival. We will all be looking forward to the unveiling in July when they will also be¬†hosting their first exhibition in the shop…very exciting!!!

You can find them at www.chandlerhouse.co.za and follow them on twitter: @MrChandlerHouse and facebook: www.facebook.com/chandlerhouse

And here are some lovely photos of the shop which I stole from their facebook page : )

KIN Kloof - overview

KIN showcases a quirky and colourful offering of designer jewellery, d√©cor, ceramics, art-prints and stationery. Passionately advocating keeping craftsmanship in South Africa, the collection focuses exclusively on local art and design – highlighting the country’s unique creative edge. Every piece is conceptualised and made in SA, with the aim of utilising and supporting local industries as well as contributing to a sustainable creative market.

Launching at the Spier Contemporary Exhibition at the Cape Town City Hall in 2010, KIN began as series of pop-up shops which aimed to create a bridge between South African design and art, and those who have fallen in love with it. The attention of both customers and potential designers was caught, and KIN’s carefully-curated offering has grown to include two physical stores ¬†(one in bustling Kloof Street and one at the V&A Waterfront) as well as an online store. The stores offer a feast of contemporary design, and are supported and celebrated by locals and internationals alike (KIN was recently featured in The Lonely Planet’s Top Choice in Shopping in Cape Town).

What KIN offers goes beyond the material in connecting local artists to a public which is growing more conscious of the importance of where something comes from and why it was made.
