Bespoke product design for The Trading Company at Spice Route

Here at Handmade By Me, when we are not making lots of our own designs and products, we work with others to help them create their own, or we can also create them for them. One of our most exciting projects that we have worked on recently, was to create a bespoke suite of decor products to sell exclusively at the brand new Trading Company shop at Spice Route wine farm.

I was really lucky to work with some wonderful and really creative people on this, which made the project not only interesting for me, but lots of fun! With the original spice trade and travel routes in mind, we worked with 3 different design themes where we created a range of products (cushion covers, tea towels and placemats) within each theme. The different themes we explored for The Trading Company were botanicals, particularly botanicals of the spices which were produced/used during the spice trade such as cinnamon, cassia, cardamom, ginger, pepper, and turmeric . The second theme was exotic lands, places in Africa and Asia which were actively involved in the spice trade. And the third theme was old-world hand painted tiles, mostly because we just love the look of them, and they tie in beautifully with the shop aesthetic, but they also compliment some of the beautiful hand painted tiles which you can find in and around the shop and farm.

Unfortunately we didn’t have any time between the order being ready, and the shop opening, so we didn’t get a chance to shoot the individual products themselves. But I have put together some digital images of the products within their themes, and below you will find some photos of them and the shop.

THE TRADING COMPANY_FINAL_2014For those of you who haven’t had a chance to visit Spice Route, here is a little more information about it and the shop The Trading Company (isn’t their logo just the prettiest?).
“The Spice Route experience is a completely unique concept for the wine and hospitality industry. A carefully curated selection of artisans showcase their produce and share their knowledge with both the public and each other. The collaborative environment allows for endless discoveries and a truly delectable journey.“The vision for Spice Route is to offer local and international tourists a selection of hand-picked artisanal producers who put as much thought, skill and passion into their products as Spice Route Winemaker, Charl du Plessis, puts into his wines,” says Spice Route Wines Owner, Charles Back. The latest addition to the Spice Route family of ‘craft’ is The Trading Company – a quirky store that’s decor is an eclectic mix of old and new. The store fits in perfectly with the Spice Route philosophy and is making authentic, and hand crafted products even more accessible to the public. The array of carefully selected bespoke home ware, exotic furniture, premium baby products, one of a kind jewelry, and notebooks, sold at the store, are a true celebration of local design. The store will primarily stock authentically handmade, limited edition pieces crafted by our very own local artists, and the small amount of Turkish and Indian products is a ‘must have’ treasure for the adventurous soul. Most of the products are made from natural and raw materials. All décor used in the store is also handmade locally, or up-cycled by local artists.”

Getting hitched : )

You may have noticed it has been a little quiet on the Handmade By Me blog and facebook page lately….well thats because I am getting married to the love of my life in 4 days time!!! And even though we are keeping things very small and simple, there are still a million and one things to do before the big day!! I find myself feeling very fortunate that I work for myself and can be pretty flexible when I need, but it is still so difficult trying to juggle two very important things! Needless to say, Handmade By Me is going on holiday for a week or so. We have only a one day honeymoon to look forward to (that was silly?), but we have lots of friends and family over from Ireland so we will be eating and drinking and driving round the countryside making sure they have the best holiday ever (and come back and visit again soon ; )).

And so I leave you with some lovely magazine loving for Handmade By Me this February…

Starting with this really lovely feature on me and my new Cape Town cushion covers and tea towels featured in the “Discoveries” section of the latest Condé Nast House & Garden magazine…

sentimental home…

I found this lovely piece of writing (below) somewhere in the realm of facebook, and thought that it was the closest thing I have seen yet, which appropriately describes what supporting local designers and makers and their handmade products is all about. It really rings true to me as a maker of products, and the sentiment is very sweet. Unfortunately I could not find the person to credit directly, so please, if any of you know, will you let me know so that I can say thank you for these lovely words.

And with that I would love to share with you this beautiful shoot that Home en Tuis Magazine did with my lovely stockist The Green Elephant Collective. It came out so beautifully, and it really goes to show that you don’t have to completely redo your home to give it a make over.

doing things digitally…

In the most recent issue of Garden & Home magazine you will find a little feature called “Brave New World” where they “look at the latest in digital design and online stores”. As most of Handmade by Me revolves around both of these, I was delighted to have my Birdy Num Num cushion cover featured alongside it. Available from Meekel, one of Handmade By Me’s lovely online stockists, you should definitely check them out! But be warned…there are LOTS of lovely things to buy so plastic at the ready!

South African Inspired : )

Yay so the good news is that my Thundafund campaign to move my printing to South Africa was a success : ) I managed to raise over R14 000 and I could not have done it without you my fellow supporters!!! THANK YOU!

For those of you who ordered products through the campaign, I will be in touch shortly to discuss which designs you would like to order for your 100% locally produced Handmade By Me products!

I am also delighted to finally be able to release my new South African inspired top secret design which is exclusive to my Thundafund campaign. I also have another two designs in the same style which you will be able to order going forward. They are all old illustrations of South Africa in the 1800’s printed onto a cotton twill, and I just love the black and white contrast. Available as tea towels, cushion covers and as a set of 8 Napkins.
